Use of control charts in manufacturing

A Brief History Walter Shewhart first utilized control charts in 1924 to aid the world of manufacturing. When total quality management (TQM) was explored, W. Edwards Deming added elements to control charts to assess every area of a process or organization.

A control chart, also called a Shewart or process behavior chart, is a tool that is used in manufacturing and other businesses to monitor processes and to assure that the processes remain stable. Walter Shewart discovered control charts in 1924 when he worked for Bell Labs. Before control charts can be used to help control an accounting process, the type of chart to use must be determined and then samples for measurement collected. Selection of the proper control chart depends upon the nature of the process and the type of data to be collected from the samples.
